Electronic
Recycling/Paper Shredding Day Planned
The
Town of Aberdeen, the Town of Southern Pines, the
Village of Pinehurst and Keep Moore County
Beautiful-PiR have scheduled a free
Electronics Recycling/Paper Shredding Day for
Saturday August 2, 2008 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in
the parking lot of the Aberdeen Wal-Mart store.
The Information Age has
created a virtual tidal wave of electronic devices –
including computers and monitors that become
obsolete or wear out at an ever-increasing rate. The
demand for newer, superior technology has increased
the pace at which current devices reach the end of
their useful lives and as a result tons of obsolete
electronics end up in the landfill.
The purpose of the
Electronic Recycling/Paper Shredding Day is to
collect all types of obsolete and unwanted
electronic devices so that they may go to a proper
recycling facility where all usable metals, plastics
and parts can be extracted and processed. Those in
turn can be used in producing other goods thus
reducing what ultimately ends up in the landfill.
The shredding of personal financial documents will
also be available at no charge. Personal financial
records in the wrong hands can be devastating to a
person or family and create real hardships. Any
paper documents you would not want in the hands of
someone else are suitable to bring to the shredding
truck that day.
Most all electronic
items will be accepted with exception of white goods
and televisions. Other items not accepted are
mercury containing devices (thermometers, fire
alarms), hazardous chemicals/materials, light bulbs,
florescent tubes and bio-waste. Items accepted
include computers, monitors, LCD screens/monitors,
VCRs, radios, stereos, DVD players, microwaves,
power supplies, rechargeable batteries, vacuums,
telephones, pagers, networking equipment, laptops,
keyboards, mice, power cables, non-hazardous medical
equipment, printers, copy machines, fax machines,
cell phones, transformers, scanners, portable
electronic devices, servers, HUBS, ink cartridges,
toner cartridges, remotes, modems, projectors and
cameras. Computer memories can be erased before
being dropped off however they will also be put
through a data destruction process three times to
insure all data is removed from the hard drive and
memory. Cell phones need not be erased of stored
data as they go through a grinder for the raw
materials to be recycled.
If you have any of
these items, hold on to them until August 2 and
bring them to Electronics Recycling/Paper Shredding
Day so they may be recycled into useful goods. Do
your part and recycle for the next generation. |
