Plastic Bottles, Wooden Pallets, and Oil Filters are Banned From
Landfill Disposal Effective October 1, 2009

North Carolina residents are encouraged to do their part to keep motor oil filters, wooden pallets, and plastic bottles out of landfills.  The disposal ban recognizes that the recovery of these materials will contribute to the state's environmental and economic development goals.  North Carolina is home to many companies that collect, process and recycle the banned materials back into a wide range of products.

Find your local government recycling contact: www.p2pays.org/localgov/ncwaste.html.

Oil filters, pallets, and plastic bottles join a list of previously banned materials:

  • Aluminum cans

  • Antifreeze

  • Appliances

  • Beverage containers from ABC permitted facilities

  • Lead-Acid batteries

  • Motor oil

  • Oyster shells

  • Yard Waste

  • Scrap tires

For more information visit N.C. Division of Pollution Prevention & Environmental Assistance at (919) 715-6500 or (800) 763-0136.  Also visit www.p2pays.org/BannedMaterials.
